You Can Earn Up To £800 A Week as a Driving Instructor

Driving Instructor Training:

If you wish to become an Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I.) here are the criteria
You will need to be over 21 years of age and have held a full UK/EEC manual car licence continuously for 3 ½ years, it should be clean, however you may still be accepted if you have no more than 5 penalty points.

The course is made up of 3 main stages, which will be explained to you in a little while and the course could be completed in 8-10 months depending on the amount of work you put in, and test dates availability.

Before we continue its important that you know the government guidelines regarding giving driving tuition.

Legislation states that it is illegal for anyone to give instructions for money or monies worth (e.g. Petrol or favours) in a motor car unless his/her name is on the register of approved drivers instructors or they hold a trainee licence to give instructions, issued by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) registrar.

If you satisfy all the above criteria, you are eligible to train to become a DSA ADI

The 3 exam stages are as follows:

Part 1:

A computerized theory test:

This consists of 100 multiple-choice questions of which you need to achieve an overall pass mark of 85%.

The questions are banded into 4 main sections

1. Road Procedure
2. Traffic Signs and Signals, Car Control, Pedestrians, Mechanical Knowledge.
3. Driving Test, Disabilities and Law
4. Publications, Instructional Technique

You need to pass 20 out of 25 questions in each band to gain a pass in that band or otherwise thought of as 80% in each band, so as you can see its possible to get 25, 25, 19, 25 and still fail the whole exam.

Further to this you also have the hazard perception element to the test of which you will get 14 video clips, this is to test your ability on how early you can spot a developing hazard, by clicking on the left mouse button, you will need to score 57 out of a possible75 points to pass this part of the theory test.

From the day you pass this exam, you will have a period of 2 years in which you must pass parts 2 and 3 of the qualifying exams, you must pass both the hazard perception and multiple choice exams to successfully complete part 1.

You can take part 1 as many times as is necessary to pass, whereas you only get 3 attempts each for parts 2 and 3.

Part 2:

Driving ability

This part of your exam will cover your eyesight and driving technique.
You will be asked to read a number plate with the indexes the size of 79.4mm high or (3 1/8 of an inch) and from a distance of 27.5m (90ft). If you fail this then you will not be allowed to continue with the remainder of the test and it will be recorded as a fail.

SO GET THOSE EYES CHECKED NOW!

This is an advanced driving test and a high degree of skill is needed to pass.

You need to achieve no more than six driver faults to pass.

You must pass part 1 before you can apply to take part 2, remember that if you fail part two 3 times you will have to wait a period of 2 years from the date in which you pass part 1 to retake the test starting with part 1 again.

When you pass parts 1 and 2 and have received a set amount of teaching ability training then you may apply for a trainee licence at a cost of £100.

This will allow you to instruct for payment, although you are not registered as an ADI this a good way to earn as you learn.

The trainee licence is valid for 6 months, and there are conditions attached to it, one example is you are only allowed to apply for 1, but in certain circumstances you may apply for and be granted a second licence.

Whilst it’s recommended, you do not have to take out a trainee licence.

The part 2 tests will last for about 1 hour and you will be expected to drive on motorways, dual carriageways, country lanes and built up areas.

You must drive safely and within legal limits with special regards towards signs and markings en-route.

During the drive you will be asked to carry out a series of manoeuvres, which are:

1. Emergency stop
2. Reverse park the vehicle into a space behind a parked car, and within the distance of 2 car lengths, close to and parallel with the kerb, or reversing into a parking bay. (Accuracy is very important).
3. Turn the vehicle around to face the opposite direction by using the forward and reverse gears.
4. Drive your vehicle in reverse gear into limited openings to the right and the left.

You will be given your results at the end of the test.

Why not take the diamond advanced motorist test and a mock part 2.
See driver improvement section.

Part 3

Instructional Ability Test

This test will assess your instructional ability and knowledge by requiring you to give practical instruction to a DSA supervising examiner.

By use of role-play, the examiner will act as a pupil.

First he or she will act the part of a learner driver with limited driving knowledge and second a learner who has pretty much reached test standard or has driven abroad.

These learner roles the examiner adopts are normally referred to as Phase 1 and Phase 2, which will last 1 hour (i.e. about 30 minutes each).

The examiner will choose a topic to which you should give instruction. This part of all the three qualifying exams is probably the one in which you will need to give 60 to 70% of your effort in order to pass.

As with Part 2 you will only be allowed 3 attempts at this exam so it is essential that you are thoroughly prepared before attempting any of the tests.

In the unlikely event of you not passing parts 2 or 3 within the two year qualifying period, this might not be the end of the world as you may have taken a while doing these so you may wait just a few months in which to start part 1 again.

You can use this time to restudy.

The Driving Standards Agency recommends that you take a proper training course before taking each part of the qualifying exams.
