Some answers to our most frequently asked questions.

1. How do I get my provisional licence?

2. Are people allowed to sit in the car with me when I take my driving test?
Yes! You are allowed one person to sit with you on test if that person is your interpreter or driving instructor.
Your driving instructor cannot act as your interpreter, he/she will only sit at your request to the examiner and observe the conduct of the test and possibly aid your confidence.

3. Are old style provisional licences still valid?
Yes but you must provide photographic identification e.g. (passport/student/work pass) as well as your provisional licence before you can take both theory and practical driving tests.

You will also need to bring your theory test pass certificate with you when attempting the practical test.

4. Can I practise with a family member or friend when learning to drive?
Yes you can, as the more practise you have the better, however you must have sufficient training by an approved driving instructor (ADI) before you do so, he or she will advise you when you are ready to do this, because as you can appreciate your family members or friends will not have dual controls to stop the vehicle if necessary.

The person supervising you should be over 21years of age and have held a full UK licence for that category of vehicle for 3 years.

5. If I pass my test on an automatic car, am I able to drive any car?

No you can’t, as your licence will have an automatic rating, which forbids you to drive a manually operated car, unless you are supervised and are displaying regulation L-plates. You must also have a minimum 3rd party insurance to drive that car.

The supervising person must be over 21 years of age and have held a full UK licence for the category of vehicle driven for at least 3 years.

6. How many lessons will I need to take to pass my driving test?

There is no magical number, as this will depend entirely on how quickly you learn as we all learn at different speeds. It’s recommended by the DSA (driving standards agency) that all learner drivers have a minimum of 45 hours tuition, with a further 22hrs of private practice to stand the best chance of passing the test first time. Whilst the majority of learners require less than this it's not uncommon for a variety of reasons for some pupils to exceed this amount.

7. How do I book my Theory Test? www.dsa.gov.uk
